On Sunday, an Earth Day to make one a true-believer in possibility with its blue skies an
d mild temperatures, we walked along 12th Avenue, not far from where we live. Up here where Manhattan Island has widened, an avenue unknown to most appears alongside the Hudson River.
It was once a meat-packing district, home of storage buildings, car repair shops. Along with the rest of the City, it is gentrifying. Restaurants have started to appear in unlikely spots.
Under this bridge there's now a very popular bar-be-que place. We were given a tour though another with that will feature an oyster bar with a view of the river--if you don't mind the swoosh of parkway traffic a few paces from your platter. This is the area Columbia University will expand its campus.
Our walk included a stop at Fairway Market. It opened just
as we retired here eleven years ago; it's the only sizeable food store in the area and more than a supermarket. With all its specialty goods, Fairway holds onto a non-fancy ambience and very diverse shoppers from folks like us, families from further uptown in Harlem, the local firemen. A click on the link introduces you to their "zipper" billboard. Its quirky mix of political comment and food specials provides some amusement when I wait for the elevated subway at 125th Street.
Also noted under the bridge a bright yellow truck named Emperor Faith--and its Plush message: Peace, Love, Unity, Strength, Harmony. Maybe it brings chickens from Pennsylvania to Fairway. Whatever. One of the reasons my online activity has been reduced is a sense of not having anything to say about the disasterous events, one after another, in the past two weeks. Along with the day's sunshine, I hoped its message was a sign. Please indulge my drift into magical thinking.

Thanks for the tour. I, too, feel the news of late is so horrific that I want to go somewhere really rural that has no cable, Internet or any other way to learn of current events.

I'm right there with you, Little Red Hen, though I have been blogging about all the horrible news lately. I live out in the country, and it's funny, some of the crazy goings-on of our rural county commissioners made the Seattle newspaper yesterday! (One of the commissioners punched another one in the nose. The puncher got arrested and the punchee got stitches. They used to be best friends. HA!) I was thinking about blogging about that, just to get my attention off of everything else.
I also thank you for the tour.
