the blogger known as Doulicia
Other Elderbloggers may have pictured something like this, but I have not seen it. A frequent reader of the blogger known as Doulicia, I figured out what these two things were amongst baby stuff saved by my mother.
Riffing about Creativity on the internet, she used the phrase "thumb sucking." Oh, someone has a "cure" or a theory--something new. I clicked and landed at a knitting site, Good Natured Ribbing. Here I discovered her "maybe this will get her to stop" invention--fingerless glove with full thumb.
Aha, that's what these pink things are from the 1930s. Someone crocheted stoppers for my bad habit. I never knew that I sucked my thumb but most babies do, so why not. Only one of these looks used. Can't imagine that anyone used two at once.
The cord intrigues me. Is it crocheted too? Ever since learning how to I-cord, I want to add to my small store of finishing techniques.
Though Good Natured Ribbing does not have a pattern on her blog, she does have an invention that appeals to those favoring double-pointed needles--the Knitzi device. If you've used these, please let me know.

do we take it you are left-handed? the left fingerless mitten has a nice stain on the thumb, which must have been your favorite after-dinner chaw....

How intriguing.
Two questions--
Siamese cats are sometimes known to suck on wool. Wouldn't the woolie encourage sucking?
My sister did not have one of these devices and would suck her thumb until it blistered. Would a woolie blister better or worse?
Of course, I used my big toes, not thumbs. Maybe things are different...

Your quotes on "cure" reminds me that I kinda wanted to riff on the whole culture of no-sucking. I have a five-year-old who loves his binkies. I have no plans to take them away...my husband wants to. I think life is rough enough that any benign thing that brings one comfort should be encouraged!
How funny that you had these when you were wee. Necessity -- or the perception of it -- is the mother of invention!

p.s. I meant to put in my last post that your condom amulets should be on the creativity page as well. Sorry for my oversight.

I've used a variation on the Knitzi (a metal tube with slit) but prefer the Stitchkeepers by Rolli (2 plastic caps linked by elastic.
