"Abortion doctor shot dead at his Kansas church"
The party of Death--a/k/a "the right to life" has struck again in Kansas.
The National Organization for Women asks us to wear a white armband tomorrow, Monday, June 1, 2009, to protest domestic violence.
Gun violence and violence against women and children continue to be intimately connected in America.
Make your voice heard as we move closer to the looming dystopia we have been warned about in Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale.

Good on you for the white armbands! Even for those of us who follow this violent righteousness posing as Christianity, it's so shocking, the senseless brutality of it! I think The Cider House Rules should be required reading for EVERYONE before they're given a HS diploma.
Don't have time to blog these days. Extra time's taken up doing everything I possibly can to get the Congress to offer up health reform legislation that does more than force all of us to buy private insurance, and I'm back in school upgrading professional skills to become employed in cancer treatment. I won't work with OFA for passage of Obama's health care proposal, because it's a cave-in to private, corporate insurance interests!!! I'm with Robert Reich on this one: The "don't maker the perfect the enemy of the better" mantra is leading some of us to "give away the store" in our haste to "get it done this year."
Would much rather be fighting this fight, however, than the ones we'd be having with a McCain/Palin presidency.
Keep on fightin', Naomi!

Sure are a lot of nuts around. Just heard another harrowing abortion story from the pre-legalization days which reminds me of what it was like, and along with this tragic murder, reminding me that the enemies of women's rights never sleep.
Was in Honolulu yesterday explaining to League of Women Voters members that universal health care is not the same as single payer. Not all members understood that. Switzerland has a highly regulated universal health care system that works pretty well. No system, single payer or otherwise, will work well without oversight, that's for sure.
Other things: I'll be tracking County Council meetings starting next week for the League.
And other things going on, too. Don't lose heart, Naomi. We're working on it!

I just wrote some extensive timely comments here on this subject, but as I reached the end they were cut off/deleted. It's too late and I'm too tired to re-write what with work tomorrow, actually later today I see by the clock.
Some good points mentioned above, especially re the "rush to get a bill through" which I'm concerned may end up being a mish mash. I don't always agree that "something is better than nothing at all," but surely there are some important health care changes that can and must be instituted. Oversight is a must! Let's hope it's better than that of TARP and all our other monies the govt. is busy distributing.
I will add one very important item that any health care plan must include -- timely delivery of services -- and not just for those designated as having life threatening problems. There are many other medical issues that demand immediate care, or early care, that if not given can result in exacerbating health issues. G.B. and Canadian systems are notorious for poor service in those areas and we must improve on them.

I was terribly saddened when I saw the headline about the murder in Kansas. Also sad that they call him the abortion doctor instead of a proponent of women's health. Does anyone else see the hypocrisy of shooting this man inside his church?!?

I just read today that something like 40% of Americans believe Jesus will return to earth in our lifetime! It's not just a few nut cases any more. One suggestion I saw: Do not refer to the anti-abortion crowd as "pro life"--ever! can we wear a white armband even though it's not monday any more?
